Community Resource Centre
The Village, Similkameen Country and the Similkameen Valley Planning Society have worked together to acquire Provincial funding for a new Community Resource Centre in Memorial Park. The Park is the site of many Village events. The new Centre, with its kitchen and stage and large storage area, improves the capacity to host events. The building is wheelchair accessible and has two outside washrooms for public use. The Centre is also home to the Similkameen Country offices and Keremeos Visitor Information Centre. The Centre opened in October 2008 and its Grand Opening is December 5, 2008.
Village Promenade
The Village and Similkameen Trails Society completed construction and restoration of a Village trail system for walking, cycling and personal mobility vehicles. The trail forms a loop joining the Great Northern Rail Trail to Boundary Road. Then south along 1st Street to the dike. Along the dike through Pine Park and Riparian Park and by the local swimming hole to just past 1oth Street. From there back to the Great Northern.
Trail Extension to Red Bridge
The Village and Similkameen Trails Society have begun construction of a trail that will link the Village Promenade to the Red Bridge. Completion is expected in 2009.
New Greeting Sign
The Village installed a colourful greeting sign near the junction at hilltop. The sign carries the familiar blue S-shaped river symbol, also used by the Similkameen Valley Planning Society, Similkameen Country and Similkameen Trails. Additional signs of this type are planned.
New Dementia Unit
BC Interior Health chose to locate 14 new dementia beds in Keremeos because the Similkameen is under represented for beds. Keremeos was chosen also because of its high population of elderly people and the opportunity to integrate the beds with the Keremeos Health Centre.
Sewer Extension
A $1.1 million dollar project will extend sewer service to a chunk of the Village on the Upper Bench. The Village is paying 1/3 of the cost, with the remainder coming from the Canada Infrastructure Program. The plan is to extend sewer service to additional homes on the Upper Bench.
