Sewer Servicing Inspections and Sump Pump Usage in the Village

The Village of Keremeos will be inspecting the sanitary sewer system and completing a condition assessment starting May 14th 2018. The project has been initiated to detect leaks within this system, understand the existing condition of the network, and identify locations with high discharges.

During periods of high groundwater levels, the Village’s sewer treatment plant has been receiving flows up to three times the average daily flow. It is suspected that sump pumps installed in the basements of buildings, which pump groundwater out of the basement into the sanitary sewer system may be the cause. The flows received are beyond the design capacity of the treatment plant. The Village’s sewer bylaw specifically prohibits the discharge of the groundwater into the sewer system.

The Village would like residences with sump pump connections to contact Public Works, who will assist in identifying alternative disposal methods for the system. Re-directing this water away from the treatment plant will prevent the Village from having to increase user rates for this utility. Additionally, if observed during camera inspection, residences discharging at higher than average flows will be identified and subject to fines as outlined in the Sewer Rates and Regulations Bylaw No. 701.

During the sewer inspection, the system will be flushed to remove any accumulated debris. The Village would like residents who experience sewer backups within their building to contact Public Works immediately and notify them of historic problems.
