Summer Hours at Landfills Starting March 1st / 2018 Compost Bins Now For Sale

Summer Landfill Hours

The Keremeos Transfer Station, Campbell Mountain Landfill and Oliver Landfill start extended hours as of March 1st.

The Keremeos Transfer Station, at the Keremeos Landfill, will be open on Wednesdays from March until the end of November.  During these months the Transfer Station will be open Wednesday Noon to 4 pm and on Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Wednesday openings were first tried two year ago and were popular with residents.  A customer survey showed almost 80% of respondents supported the Transfer Station being open an additional day even with a potential small rise in local taxes.

The Campbell Mountain will reopen on Sundays from March until the end of November.  The Campbell Mountain Landfill hours will be open 8:30 am to 4:45 pm every day except Statutory Holidays and Boxing Day.  The Oliver Landfill will be opening at 10 am on weekdays starting in March until the end of November.  The Oliver Landfill will be open from 10 am to 3:45 pm Monday to Saturday.  The Oliver Landfill will be closed Sundays, Statutory Holidays and Boxing Day.

2018 Compost Bins Now For Sale

Residents across the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) can pre-purchase wholesale compost bins until March 21st only at participating locations. Collection of all pre-purchased bins will start Earth Day which falls on April 22nd.

The FreeGarden Earth Compost Bin™ is available for $46 plus taxes. A curved black container, the compost bin helps break down garden waste, leaves, uncooked fruits and vegetables. It is a great system for creating rich compost for home gardens.  In Keremeos, the Home Building Centre will be pre-selling compost bins. The pre-sale ends on March 21st and residents can collect purchased units on April 22nd.

This year the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen will be exclusively selling the Green Cone™. The Green Cone is capable of breaking down cooked food waste and meat. It is being sold for $124.85 plus taxes. This system is buried partially in the ground where it breaks down waste directly into the soil. The Green Cone is a great compliment to an existing compost bin. For more information on how to purchase and use the Green Cone, contact the RDOS Solid Waste Division at 250-490-4129, info@rdos.bc.ca or visit www.rdos.bc.ca.
